The objective of the game revolves around helping Oliver find sanctuary by accumulating Luck and Shillings. Through clever gameplay and strategic decision-making, players aim to gather eight Sanctuary Points to win. Each player starts with a hand of six unique character cards, including favorites like The Artful Dodger, Bill Sikes, and Nancy. These double-sided cards introduce a dynamic element to gameplay, as they can be given to opponents, resulting in gains or losses in Luck or Shillings, depending on how they are used.

A key feature of Twist of Fate is the element of "twisting fate" through Luck and Shilling cards. Players can manipulate their fortunes and those of their opponents, creating a fast-paced, interactive experience. When a player reaches a total of four Luck or Shillings, they advance their Sanctuary Tokens, bringing them closer to victory. The race to reach Mr. Brownlow's house and secure sanctuary adds an exciting urgency to the gameplay.
