It’s clear that in order to get your openings visible to job searchers, you must post your positions on job boards. But what are the best job boards?

In our digital age, searching online job boards has become the norm for seeking employment. In fact, a Pew Research Center report revealed that 79 percent of Americans seeking employment in the previous two years used job boards as part of their search — more than personal connections or professional contacts, and twice as much as hiring agencies, traditional ads or job fairs. Nearly one-third of job hunters said the internet was their most important resource.

Below is a comprehensive list of the top job boards by category, and key benefits to each.

Best Job Boards – General


Founded in 2007, Glassdoor is a website where current and former employees anonymously review companies and their management:

  • Glassdoor boasts a large database of company reviews — submitted by employees. It promotes itself as giving job seekers insights into a company’s work conditions, interview processes, salaries and benefits. There are even charts to show how a company’s rating has changed over time. Glassdoor gives you the info you need to find job opportunities and the context to see if it’s a good fit for you.
  • Glassdoor offers snapshots of information for free. If users want to delve more deeply, they must fill out a questionnaire about a recent or current job, including compensation. Glassdoor does no independent checking of the data its users provide. The site says it has salary information for 160,000 companies based on 2.5 million user reports.

CareerBuilder is an online employment website, founded in 1995, with offices in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia:

  • CareerBuilder is one of the largest job boards, providing job listings, resume posting, and career advice and resources to job seekers. Its robust search function allows you to filter by several criteria, including location, degree required and pay range.
  • CareerBuilder secures job listings directly from employers and has expanded local listings by partnering with many newspapers to incorporate their online classifieds.


Created in 1999, Monster is an American-based global employment website owned and operated by Monster Worldwide, Inc.:

  • Monster is one of the oldest online job boards and includes one of the largest volumes of job listings. It includes 50 countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia, and sells services to recruiters and companies looking to hire.
  • Job seekers can post their resumes and comb listings for free. The site also includes loads of free content on everything from resume and cover letter writing to interviewing tips and sample resignation letters.

  • Indeed is one of the most efficient sites for surveying job listings, since it aggregates information from job boards, news sites and company listings. An advanced search function enables users to drill down on a location, keyword and salary range.
  • Indeed says it has 70 million unique visitors and 1.5 billion job searches a month. It’s available in 60 countries and 28 languages.
  • Users can also upload a resume and get a personalized resume link to share with employers. You can also research salaries, job trends and more.
  • Its aggregation algorithms are unparalleled, meaning there’s a better chance that jobs posted on other random job boards, sites and companies will show up here.
  • For many companies, it’s the go-to free job board. It’s got anything from entry level to executive listings, and full- to part-time jobs.


Founded in 2003, Simply Hired is an employment website and mobile application that’s also an online recruitment advertising network:

  • Simply Hired is a search engine for jobs and a quick way to survey a massive number of listings. The site aggregates information from job boards, news sites and company listings.
  • It currently operates in 24 countries and at last count had 30 million unique visitors a month.

Action Without Borders (also known as Idealist) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1995. This organization is about reaching out and connecting individuals with advantages to volunteer, work and intern:

  • Idealist is the nation’s largest employment board for nonprofit jobs with more than 1 million registered users. It is the premier clearinghouse for information on full-time internship and volunteer positions within the nonprofit You can identify target organizations by their mission and specific opportunities within various niches.
