The Solution
The Wonderlic 360° Review System helps individuals gain a broader perspective on their job performance by allowing employees such as direct reports, peers, supervisors, customers and others to participate in the employee evaluation process via surveys.
An employee evaluation done by one individual gives you only one perspective, while an employee survey that includes multiple levels of feedback is comprehensive, providing valuable information that can be used to increase personnel performance and employee retention.
Wonderlic 360° Review Helps Consultants Link Workplace Performance to Company Goal
Setting overall goals and objectives for a company is one thing, but putting them into everyday practice, going beyond what's written on a mission statement and into every cubicle and office in the building, is quite another. That's why many companies turn to consultants like Mitch Bienvenue, Owner of Accomplish, Inc., a consulting firm based in the Chicago area. Often, the expertise of an outside consultant is just what's needed to put a lofty mission statement into real - world practice.
Bienvenue relies on the Wonderlic 360 Review System to help gather the information companies need to develop individual employees in order to achieve company goals.
Bienvenue's process is comprehensive. First, he consults with company executives to determine their immediate and long - term goals for the company. He then looks at individual jobs within the company or department and then creates a list of competencies for each job that are needed to help the company achieve its goals. "In order to determine which of those competencies an employee already has and which he or she needs to work on, I use the Wonderlic 360 degree review. Your own perspective about your job performance is important, but it's not enough," Bienvenue explains.
"In order to determine which of those competencies an employee already has and which he or she needs to work on, I use the Wonderlic 360 degree review. Your own perspective about your job performance is important, but it's not enough,"
- Mitch Bienvenue, Owner of Accomplish, Inc.
To begin the actual 360° review, he sends an email invitation to the participants which leads directly to the Wonderlic online review platform. Participants are asked to rate their boss, co - workers and/or subordinates on a numerical scale in such areas as communication style, effectiveness and other specific workplace behaviors. Participants also have an opportunity to include comments. Wonderlic compiles the ratings and related comments into a personal report for each individual that is being evaluated.
But that's only the first part of the process. "It's great to get this feedback," says Bienvenue. "But if you don't do anything with it, what's it all for? You need to create a development plan based on the report."
If an employee learns from the 360° review that he has a problem communicating effectively with his co - workers, what should he or she do about it? Bienvenue says it's vital to make an action plan. Will training solve the problem? Do you need a mentor who can show you better ways of communicating? A coach?
Typically, everyone in a department participates in the 360. Bienvenue recommends sharing results with other participants, talking about strengths and weaknesses as a department, and holding each other accountable for change.
"The 360 degree review is important because performance reviews don't always happen in companies, even though they should," Bienvenue says. "In many cases, employees are going about their workday in a vacuum, never hearing what they're doing wrong or right."
"If you're serious about change and growth, put all of your action plans on paper and hold each other accountable," he says. "Meet again in three to four months to talk about how you've progressed. That's how real personal development happens."
Bienvenue uses the Wonderlic 360° review system because it's designed specifically to link an employee's performance with organizational standards, making it possible to evaluate individual contributions in meeting those standards. The results provide practical information for workforce development programs.
"The opinions of your peers, coworkers, supervisors and customers are so important because we work with people, and our effectiveness depends on working well with them," he says. "The 360 degree review is vital because people never talk about this stuff in the workplace. They need a constructive, safe, anonymous forum in which to air these opinions. That's what Wonderlic provides."
